Rep. Becky Currie’s bill allowing retired officers to buy service sidearm progresses in senate

JACKSON — A bill written by Lincoln County Rep. Becky Currie to allow retired law enforcement officers to purchase service sidearms was referred to Senate Committee Judiciary Division B Monday morning. Sen. Jason Barrett serves on the Judiciary Division B committee and serves Lincoln County.

Currie’s house bill 634 would allow law enforcement officers to purchase their service sidearm upon retirement. The bill passed in the house with 117 yes votes. Under the legislation, local governing bodies would only be allowed to set the cost of the sidearm at $50 or less.

According to the Senate Schedule, there is no meeting for the Judiciary Division B Committee this week. Mississippi’s House of Representatives are set to convene at 4 p.m. according to the House Schedule.
