MISSISSIPPI – An infamous Mississippi prison could be shut down if a bill introduced into Mississippi legislature gets signed into law.
Senate Bill 2353 looks to “phasedown” the state penitentiary in Parchman over four years and transfer its inmates, employees and programs to other state and regional facilities of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
Under the bill, the Mississippi Department of Corrections would then hold the land at Parchman in trust and lease the grounds and buildings for agriculture, industrial, commercial, residential or recreational use.
The bill also calls for the Mississippi Department of Corrections to designate an existing building on the site to be the “Northwest Mississippi Facility for the Treatment and Care of Inmates with Mental Illness.”
