Report: Mississippi 5th most federally-dependent state

JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – A recent WalletHub report shows that Mississippi relies more on federal funding than almost all U.S. states.

The Magnolia State was ranked fifth overall. According to WalletHub , Mississippi’s residents are the 7th most dependent on federal funds on average. Based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, this is not surprising. In 2022, 11.5% of the U.S. population lived in poverty. In Mississippi, 19.1% of residents live in poverty, the highest in the U.S. In the capital city, the poverty rate is 25.9% . At $52,985 , the Magnolia State’s median household income is the lowest nationwide.

The state government is also dependent on the federal government as well. The WalletHub report revealed that Mississippi had the largest share of domestic product per capita derived from federal government dollars. For instance, the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure plan allocated over $4 billion to Mississippi. The Biden administration also allocated $600 million for Jackson’s water system. WalletHub ranked Jackson as the sixth most impoverished major city in the country last December .
