Jean Carnahan, Missouri’s first female U.S. senator, dies at 90

ST. LOUIS – Jean Carnahan, the first Missouri woman to become a U.S. senator, died Tuesday evening after a brief illness, according to her family. She was 90 years old. Carnahan, the widow of Missouri’s 51st governor, Democrat Mel Carnahan, became the first woman to represent Missouri in the Senate after she was appointed to the seat that her husband posthumously won in 2000.
