Three historic Missouri ghost towns: not all are creepy or even haunted

When you hear the phrase, ghost town, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the abandoned town is full of ghosts and hauntings. It means it was abandoned for any number of reasons. That abandonment, however, creates a curiosity. Some people might wonder why people left a town.

The notion that a ghost town is haunted comes from books we read or fiction movies we see. Of course, there’s the imagination. You might hear a sound in an abandoned town which might carry you to think or even believe it was made by something supernatural simply because the town is labeled as a ghost town.

Regardless of what we believe, we will always have a curiosity of the unknown. There are many towns in Missouri and elsewhere labeled as ghost towns. This doesn’t mean those sites are inhabited by ghosts. Below are three examples of towns in Missouri that have this label.

Georgia City

All that is left representative of Georgia City, Missouri is the cemetery. It used to be a town located in Jasper County, Missouri about 15 miles north of Joplin. The site of this community is where Oak Road comes to an end at County Road 270.
