Ex-MO Senate Minority Whip Maria Chapelle-Nadal launches primary challenge to U.S. Rep. Cori Bush

Maria Chappelle-Nadal has been a high-profile political figure in Missouri. She has also been a source of controversy even among her fellow members of the Democratic Party.

Chappelle-Nadal now seems to have her sights set on federal level politics. And it also seems that she is willing to try to topple an incumbent in her party.

Maria Chappelle-Nadal has entered the Democratic primary for a seat in the United States House of Representatives from the 1st District of Missouri, which is based in St. Louis. The move pits her against incumbent Cori Bush, who is running for re-election.

With her entrance, Chappelle-Nadal becomes the second Democrat to issue a challenge to Bush, who has been in office since 2021, during the 2024 cycle. She joins St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell.

This marks the second time that Chappelle-Nadal has challenged a Democratic incumbent in the 1st District. She unsuccessfully did so in 2016 against Lacy Clay.

Chappelle-Nadal was first elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2004. After being re-elected twice, she won a seat in the Missouri Senate in 2010. After winning another term in 2014, she was chosen as Minority Whip.
