MO Governor recognizes disability voting rights week Sept. 9-13

MISSOURI (KOAM) — Governor Mike Parson proclaims September 9-13 Disability Voting Rights Week in the state of Missouri.

According to the Office of the Governor , the week celebrates community, advocacy, and building power.

“In general, the disability movement is about independence for people with disabilities. Accessible voting machines help create that independence. It enables someone like myself to cast my vote instead of someone doing it for me. For people with disabilities, voting is part of the movement to bring independence to themselves.” (Elton Thomas, Paraquad Board Member)

Governor Parson gathered with the following advocates in honor of the week:

  • Empower Abilities
  • Paraquad
  • League of Women Voters
  • Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council
  • Missouri Association of County Clerks and Election Authorities (MACCEA)

“It was important that we bring together the diverse voices from across the state that have been advocating for disability voting rights,” said Leigh Anne Haun, Policy Coordinator, Missouri Developmental Disabilities Council.
