It’s going to be a great weekend for indoor plans

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – It will be a quiet evening with skies clouding over. Rain will begin to move into southwest Nebraska later this evening and spread east and north as we head into tomorrow morning. Overnight, rain chances will be on the increase from the south west.. As the night goes on, there may also be enough instability where lightning and rumbles of thunder will be possible. Rainfall rates could be a bit more enhanced in areas where there are non-severe thunderstorms. Fairly widespread rainfall is expected on Saturday and even Saturday night. Through Saturday night, the rain will start to lighten up. Into Sunday, the trend of easing showers will continue and eventually will come to an end by later in the afternoon or early in the evening. It’s looking like the lowest amounts of rain will be across the northeastern parts of the Local4 viewing area. Many of these places will be looking at a half inch of rain or less. Some may get very little rain in the far northeast. Much of our area will be facing a widespread half inch to an inch of rain. The area of biggest concern will be over South Central Nebraska and North Central Kansas. Most models are now pretty consistent with 1 to 2 inches of rain falling with possibly some higher amounts in spots over 2 inches. I am concerned about some localized low land flooding near some of our rivers and streams. The combination of recent snow melt, partially frozen ground, potential ice jamming, and rainfall runoff could contribute to flooding in low-lying areas near rivers and streams. Some of the things working against a bigger flood threat are that much of the snow has already melted, we haven’t seen much ice jamming so far, and the ground is thawed in the upper layer of soil. But if you live in some of these locations, continue to monitor the situation in case water starts to come up in your location. Temperatures will mostly remain in the 40s and lower 50s over the weekend, so there’s not really much of a threat of snow. We could see mid and upper 30s Saturday night into Sunday morning.
