Texas county commissioner accidentally shoots grandson while officiating wedding

A Texas county commissioner will spend one year on probation for accidentally shooting his grandson during a wedding he was officiating.

Michael Gardner of Odessa was sentenced Monday for misdemeanor child abuse in the 2023 shooting. His grandson, 12 years old at the time, was wounded in the shoulder.

The shooting at the Nebraska wedding happened when Gardner pulled out a revolver, intending to shoot a blank into the air to signal the start of the outdoor ceremony. But as he was cocking the gun’s hammer, it fired, hitting his grandson.

The teen is doing just fine now.
