What Virginians need to know about McDonald’s Quarter Pounders and the E. coli outbreak

According to Patch Virginia, a deadly E. coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders sold in some states raises questions about whether eating the sandwiches served in Virginia’s franchises is safe.

Quarter Pounders are still on the menu in Virginia and are safe to eat, according to McDonald’s.

What Virginians need to know

One person has died in a 10-state E. coli outbreak tied to McDonald’s Quarter Pounders, and 49 have been sickened, 10 of them requiring hospitalization, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Virginia was not on the list of those reporting illnesses. The 10 states listed are Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Most illnesses occurred in Colorado (26) and Nebraska (nine).

Action McDonald’s has taken

McDonald’s said it has removed Quarter Pounders from the menu in those states and some franchises in Idaho, Nevada, and New Mexico “out of an abundance of caution.” No illnesses have been reported in those three states. Still, restaurants received the products linked to the outbreak, McDonald’s North America Chief Supply Chain Officer Cesar Piña said in a statement.
