On October 19, 1982, the historic E.F. Hempstead House at 14th and H Streets (1347 H Street) in Pawnee City, Nebraska (Pawnee County) was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The front facade is interesting and unique.
This two-and-a-half-story house was constructed between 1887 and 1888 for a banker and businessman named E.F. Hempstead. According to the Redfin real estate website, the house was listed in August 2023 and unlisted in November.
The Hempstead House is important because of its Victorian Queen Anne architecture, a popular style in eastern Nebraska from the late 1880s through the 1890s. The ornate porch is one of the identifiers of a Queen Anne-styled house.
E. F. Hempstead was an important figure in Pawnee City. He established the Pawnee Electric Light Company and was the owner and president of the Nebraska State Bank.
Hempstead came to Nebraska from Illinois, settling in Pawnee City in late 1886. Not long after he arrived in the city, he and S. Edward Smith purchased the Nebraska State Bank from W.C. Henry who built the bank.
