(WOWT) – The House of Representatives cast votes for Speaker of the House on Friday as the 119th Congress convened for the first day of session. Republican Speaker of the House Mike Johnson of Louisiana retained his post, but Democrat Hakeem Jeffries, the House Minority leader from New York, stayed within a razor-thin margin throughout the counts. It was such a close race that the representatives were preparing for a second round of voting when two who had previously cast votes for others changed their picks: Congressman Keith Self, R-Texas, initially voted for Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla.; and Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., first voted for Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.
