Abortion rights petition cleared to gather signatures

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A slimmed-down version of a ballot initiative to put abortion rights in the Nevada Constitution has cleared its first hurdle, according to proponents.

Carson City District Court Judge James Russell reviewed petition language submitted on Dec. 6, 2023, and ruled on Tuesday that it meets requirements, according to a news release from Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom (NRF). The petition can now move forward, and signatures can be gathered to put the question on the ballot for the general election.

“Today’s ruling ensures Nevadans will have the opportunity to establish a permanent state constitutional right to abortion this November,” according to Lindsey Harmon, president of NRF.

“However, abortion rights are not the only form of reproductive freedom under attack across the country. Protecting miscarriage management, birth control, prenatal and postpartum care, and other vital reproductive health care services are inextricably linked pieces of a singular right to reproductive freedom,” Harmon said.
