In a move towards enhancing taxpayer convenience, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is set to pilot its Direct File program, a free direct e-filing service. The program is in response to the Inflation Reduction Act, which mandated the IRS to explore the feasibility of creating a user-friendly, secure, and free electronic filing tool for federal income tax returns.
