Gun Control in Nevada: Understanding the Recent Legislative Measures

Nevada has recently been at the forefront of a heated debate regarding gun control, sparked by a series of legislative measures aimed at tightening gun regulations in the state. This comes amidst concerns over gun violence and its impact on public safety, particularly as the state and the nation prepare for the 2024 elections.

One of the critical pieces of legislation is Assembly Bill 354, which proposes to ban firearms within 100 feet of polling places. This bill, if passed, would redefine firearm frames and receivers and could impose criminal penalties for carrying a weapon too close to a polling location. Notably, the bill’s stipulations include exceptions for law enforcement and security personnel and would not apply to firearms stored in vehicles or buildings within the specified radius, provided they are securely locked.

Another controversial bill is Assembly Bill 355, which seeks to restrict individuals between 18 to 20 years from possessing semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. This bill has drawn significant attention, as it challenges the rights of young adults to own certain types of firearms, a move that some view as infringing on Second Amendment rights. The legislation also mandates that gun owners secure their semi-automatic long guns to prevent access by those under 21, introducing potential criminal penalties for non-compliance.
