Forecasters: Next winter storm could hit California, Nevada with 3-feet of snow in some places

The National Weather Service’s Reno office has issued a comprehensive afternoon discussion, providing a detailed outlook for an impending winter storm set to impact the Tahoe region and extend into western Nevada.

The forecast predicts substantial snowfall, making this storm the most significant of the season thus far.

According to the forecast, there is a 60% chance of 2+ feet of snow at lake level in the Tahoe region, with the Sierra crest potentially receiving upwards of 3+ feet.

The storm is expected to make its presence felt from Sunday into Tuesday, causing major disruptions to travel in the Sierra region.

The timing of the storm is outlined in the discussion, indicating that impacts will commence before sunrise on Sunday in Mono County, gradually spreading northward to Alpine County and the Tahoe Basin. By mid-morning, the storm is expected to spill over into far western Nevada.

The main moisture push, with the highest accumulation rates, is anticipated from late Sunday afternoon through Monday morning, affecting both the ski commute on Sunday and the morning commute on Monday. Precipitation, albeit less intense, is projected to persist through at least Tuesday.
