California Mexican cheese Listeria recall expands to include street taco kit sold at supermarkets

The Save Mart Companies issued a voluntary recall of all lot and date codes of Chicken Street Taco Kits sold in Save Mart, Lucky, and Lucky California store service delis. The recall comes in response to the inclusion of a cup of crema sauce containing cotija cheese produced by Rizo-Lopez Foods, which has been recalled due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes, a bacterium that can cause severe infections, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, is the cause for concern.

While healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection poses a greater risk to specific demographics, including pregnant women, where it can lead to miscarriages and stillbirths.

The affected Chicken Street Taco Kits, assembled and packaged by in-store delis at Save Mart, Lucky, and Lucky California stores, were supplied to The Save Mart Companies by Fresh Creative Foods, a division of Reser’s Fine Foods. The recall covers kits sold in California and Nevada.
