Jill Douglas cites education and crime as key issues in Nevada State Senate race

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Jill Douglas, a Republican running for State Senate District 6, joined the 8 News Now Daily Voting Guide to discuss her platform as she challenges for the seat.

“You have to ask yourself, are we better off today than we were four years ago? And the answer is no,” Douglas said, addressing issues such as Nevada’s education system and rising crime rates. “Residents and businesses don’t need more break-ins. We just need a break,” she added.

Douglas emphasized that her opponent, Nicole Cannizzaro, has not adequately addressed the needs of Nevadans, saying, “I have watched her when she has not paid attention to the voice and the values of Nevadans.” She also stressed that voters care more about results than party affiliation. “What Nevadans care about is a government that listens to them, and that is responsive to their needs,” she said.

Turning to education, Douglas recalled her frustration during a hearing for Opportunity Scholarships. “I was appalled when all of these children came to voice their concern to the legislature. And they were ignored,” she said. She criticized the lack of accountability in education funding, pointing to low proficiency levels in the Clark County School District. “We need to create competition,” she argued, advocating for school choice and vocational training options.
