NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — New Jersey’s Senate Transportation Committee has advanced a bill that would require e-bikes and scooters to be registered and insured.
Members of the transportation committee unanimously approved the bill , sponsored by Senate President Nick Scutari, last week.
It would require so-called low-speed electric bikes and scooters to be registered with the Motor Vehicle Commission. Owners would be required to obtain liability insurance, personal injury coverage for pedestrians and uninsured motorist coverage.
Registration would be on a yearly basis and riders would be expected to carry the appropriate documentation.
As of now, there is no insurance option specifically for low-speed vehicles like these. Riders would not be required to have a license.
This bill still has to get through full votes in both the Assembly and Senate before the governor could sign or veto it.
