Average NJ gas price is close to $3. Why are gas pricing falling now?

New Jersey drivers may finally get some relief going into the school year, because gas prices are easing up.

Figures by travel club AAA show that the average price for a gallon of gas was $3.08 as of Tuesday, down from $3.09 yesterday, $3.15 last week and $3.28 a month ago.

In Bergen and Passaic counties, the average cost of a gallon of gas was $3.06, figures from AAA show. Many individual gas stations have already begun selling gas at less than $3 a gallon , according to figures from GasBuddy.com.

“Gasoline prices continue to crumble across nearly the entire nation,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis with GasBuddy.com.

“With the change to winter gasoline happening today at most stations across the country, the outlook is bright for the national average to continue to make a run at falling to $2.99 per gallon for the first time since 2021.”

Why are gas prices falling now?

Denton Cinquegrana, an analyst with the Rockville, Maryland-based Oil Price Information Service, said lower gas prices this time of year are to be expected thanks to the switch to the cheaper winter blend of gas.
