Victim loses $900 in Bitcoin scam involving fake deputy

CLOVIS, New Mexico (KVII) — A Curry County resident lost more than $900 in a Bitcoin scam involving someone posing as a sheriff’s deputy.

Sheriff Michael Brockett said the scammer spoofed the sheriff’s office number to make it appear the call was coming from the agency. The caller used a fictitious name, identified himself as a deputy and claimed the victim had a warrant for failure to appear in court.

The caller also provided fraudulent documents that included the victim’s actual name. The victim then transferred more than $900 through a CoinFlip cryptocurrency ATM to an unknown account…
