New Mexico Taxpayers: A Costly Proposal for Border Wall Funding by Rep John Block

New Mexico legislative bill HB111 is proposed by John Block, Harlan Vincent, Stefani Lord and Jenifer Jones to have New Mexico taxpayers fund $1.5 Billion dollars of border wall rather than the Federal Government whose responsibility is border protection.

The proposal does not have New Mexico contractors, nor the state of New Mexico build the wall but makes good rhetoric and talking points for re-election using New Mexico taxpayer dollars of $1.5 Billion.

The proposed New Mexico HM 24 supports completion of a border barrier but does not expend New Mexico taxpayer dollars towards that effort.

HB 111 provides that “money shall not be expended unless the state of the New Mexico has entered into an agreement with the federal government to allow such a barrier.” Stepping away from the rhetoric of Mr. Block et all, this is a bill is an offer to the Federal Government contribute $1.5B in the event that the federal government decides to construct a barrier on New Mexico’s border.

Why should New Mexico taxpayers fund a wall that already had funding authorization by congress using Federal funds?
