New Mexico changes child support requirements

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A new child support schedule is going into effect in New Mexico. The new guidelines could mean some New Mexicans pay more for child support.

In 2023, New Mexico lawmakers approved a bill to change child support . Now, the Human Services Department (HSD) has issued new guidelines for child support.

HSD says New Mexicans earning mid-level or high-level incomes could se an increase in the amount of child support they need to pay if their case goes through a modification. Lower-income New Mexicans could see a decrease in the support they have to pay. But current child support payments will not be changed without a court considering a motion to modify payments, according to HSD.

The new guidelines also aim to take into account the current state of the labor market when setting child support payments. They also remove the $5-per-month payment required for children covered by Medicaid or other public insurance.
