Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has named Brig. Gen. Jamison Herrera as the Cabinet Secretary of the New Mexico Department of Veterans’ Services (DVS). Herrera has been the Acting Secretary of the DVS since September 2023. He also serves as the Deputy Adjutant General for the New Mexico National Guard. The Governor highlighted Herrera’s 34 years of military service with the National Guard.
Herrera thanked the Governor for his appointment and promised to continue his work for veterans. He plans to build partnerships to improve veterans’ services in the state. His military background equips him to support veterans and tackle their issues.
Born in New Mexico, Herrera’s parents were both U.S. Navy veterans. His father served in the Vietnam War. Herrera started his military career in 1989, joining the 515th Maintenance Battalion in Santa Fe as a Private First Class. He later became an officer through the Officer Candidate School class 33-91.
Herrera currently serves as the Land Component Commander of the New Mexico National Guard. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in University Studies from the University of New Mexico and a Master’s in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.
