Powerful winter storm arrives in New Mexico this weekend

A weak disturbance overnight brought more snow across northern New Mexico, with snow flurries continuing to fall early this morning. A few snow flurries across the Northern Mountains and into southern Colorado are possible, but most of New Mexico will remain dry today. Temperatures will remain below average along and west of the Central Mountain Chain, more seasonable east. Slightly breezy conditions will persist this afternoon, but not nearly as windy as the past couple days.

A powerful storm will arrive overnight, bringing a band of snow/rain to central parts of the state. Snow will get more widespread along and north of I-40 into Saturday afternoon. Winter Weather Watches are in effect across northeastern New Mexico tonight through Saturday night with 4-8″ possible in lower elevation, and over a foot of additional snowfall over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. How far south the snow travels is still uncertain…on model has an inch of snow all the way down to Roswell/Hobbs, while another keeps the heaviest snow northeast.
