NEW MEXICO (KRQE) –There is new confusion about how New Mexico handles its Safe Haven Baby Boxes, where mothers are told they can anonymously surrender a newborn. It now has lawmakers trying to rush a bill through the Roundhouse to fix it.
Safe Haven Baby Boxes have been advertised as a safe and anonymous place where mothers can surrender their newborns no questions asked. Right now there are at least six baby boxes in New Mexico and four babies who have been surrendered in them. But now, there is confusion.

“I thought, how is this possible that this is actually happening like this when we have these boxes for a reason…which is anonymity,” said Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes.
