New Mexico governor reacts to the end of the 2024 lawmaking session, hints at potential special session

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – The 2024 legislative session is over, and politicians have been working through debates on a wide range of bills for New Mexico. A key focus was the state’s budget – the largest in state history – but dozens of other issues came up, from crimefighting to environmental protections, many of them supported by the governor.

“This was a budget session . . . but I wanted this to be about public safety,” New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham said in a press conference. “We have, particularly, two measures that, in fact, save lives and reduce the public safety challenges in the state.”

Some measures that lawmakers approved include a seven-day waiting period on gun purchases and a bill to keep guns away from polling areas during elections. Lawmakers also approved changes to when courts can hold someone who is accused of a felony before trial without a bond. Lawmakers also passed a bill to make it easier for retired law enforcement to go back to work.
