ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The window has opened for lawmakers to file bills they want to introduce during this year’s 60-day legislative session. One bill that is sure to spark debate would stop funding public libraries that ban books. “It is not a culture war bill,” said New Mexico House Representative Kathleen Cates. “It is a way that we can protect our libraries.”

It’s a bill that almost got all the way through the state legislature last year but failed to pass as the 30-day session came to a close. Now, Rep. Cates is once again introducing that piece of legislation, with some slight changes, aimed at making sure public libraries don’t ban books. “This bill is about protecting our children, so they’re not attacked for political or social change reasons,” Rep. Cates said.
