NY fire instructor Mahlon Irish Jr.’s retirement leaves legacy of cancer prevention

Several local and state agencies gathered to recognize New York State Fire Instructor Mahlon Irish Jr. on his retirement as a state fire instructor Wednesday evening. Irish served as an instructor from January 1984 until January 2024, but has served as a firefighter for over 50 years, including as chief of the Homer Fire Department. During that time, Irish has instructed countless numbers of firefighters in various classes from basic firefighter operations to fire apparatus operators.
