Dangerous Snacking: Utz Chips Recalled

Do not look now but snacking appears to have gotten a bit more dangerous to our health. Just a day after news broke that a British ballet dancer has died after suffering an allergic reaction to cookies which allegedly failed to disclose that they contained peanuts on their label we now have another potential allergen issue to report.

On Jan 26th, 2023 the FDA reports that Utz Quality Foods, LLC., is issuing a voluntary recall for 88 cases of Utz® 2.75 oz. Wavy Original Potato Chips due to an undeclared milk allergen. According to Mayo Clinic this is one of the most common food allergies in children. Signs and symptoms of milk allergy range from mild to severe and can include wheezing, vomiting, hives and digestive problems. Milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis — a severe, life-threatening reaction.

This recall was initiated after Utz learned that approximately 1200 single-serve bags contained Utz® Wavy Original Potato Chips flavored with seasoning instead of plain Utz® Wavy Original Potato Chips. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may run the risk of an allergic reaction if they consume these products.
