$8.7 Million in stolen vehicles and parts recovered in NYS

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – DMV investigators recovered 286 stolen vehicles valued at nearly $8.6 million in stolen auto parts, Hochul announced today.

Among the 286 recovered vehicles, 17 of those were recovered in the Finger Lakes region. DMV investigators also recovered 157 auto parts across the state, nearly doubling the number of parts recovered in 2022.

With the significant increase in vehicle thefts in New York State. Governor Hochul initiated a five-point plan called the Comprehensive Auto-Theft Reduction Strategy.

Some highlights of the program include $5 Million in prevention programs for teens and young adults, high State Police presence in high-theft areas, and Hochul’s letter to each New Yorker who owns a Kia or Hyundai.

Since the introduction of CARS , motor vehicle thefts are down 50 percent in Rochester, and 45 percent in Buffalo when compared to the prior 4-month period.

“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority,” Hochul said. “I launched the Comprehensive Auto-Theft Reduction Strategy to support our law enforcement and protect New Yorkers from theft, and these investments are paying off.”
