Some lawmakers want NY to manufacture prescription drugs, lower costs

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)–Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced the New York State Senate is advancing a package of legislation to make prescriptions like, insulin, less expensive for New Yorkers.

“Accessible and affordable prescription medication is not a luxury, we know that,” said Senate Majority Leader, Andrea Stewart-Cousins. “We know it is a necessity.”

One of those bills is the New York Affordable Drug Manufacturing Act.

“What this bill will do is authorize the state to partner with private companies to actually produce generic drugs, particularly insulin,” explained Senator Gustavo Rivera, the bill’s sponsor.

Affordable insulin is a priority for Governor Kathy Hochul too. In her executive budget, she proposed banning copays for the drug on some insurance plans.
