Erie County legislator seeks answers on migrant crisis costs, reimbursement

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – As the migrant crisis continues across New York state — an Erie County legislator is looking for answers from the state — and New York City — regarding reimbursement for local schools to educate migrant children.

Last year, NYC officials told leaders in WNY that there would be no costs locally for moving, housing and supporting migrant families. But, schools say they’ve had to pay high costs related to educating migrant children.

Republican Erie County Legislator Frank Todaro has written a letter to Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams seeking answers on who will foot the bill for educating migrant children.

“Our office is pleading for just some kind of conversation, just come to the table and get some answers, we’ve been trying for months since this all started back in August when the buses started arriving and we have never had one conversation with either the Mayor or the Governor’s team,” Todaro said.

The Maryvale School District is in Todaro’s district, where 80 migrant children started the school year, a big influx in students.
