Hochul to approve 4x expansion in red light cameras

CITYWIDE – GOV. HOCHUL ON Wednesday is expected to sign into law a bill that will allow the city to increase the number of active red-light cameras at intersections to 600, reports Politico. The bill was sponsored in the state Senate by Andrew Gounardes and in the Assembly by Jeffrey Dinowitz. The new law will also extend the end date for the camera program to December of 2027. Red-light camera activations are currently capped at just 150 at a given time citywide. This will mark the first major expansion of red-light cameras since New York first implemented them in 1997. Gounardes’ bill notes that traffic cameras are supported by 85% of New Yorkers, including 84% of car owners.
