Governor Kathy Hochul signed a new measure into New York law that set a maximum temperature for classrooms in New York’s public schools.
The rule, enacted on Friday, mandates that teachers handle hot conditions once temperatures hit 82 degrees. These new measures will go into effect on September 1, 2025. If the school has air conditioning or fans, they are encouraged to use them and draw the blinds.
Students would have to leave the area if the temperature rose above 88 degrees. Students would either be sent home, or instruction would need to be moved to a more fabulous area.
With around 700,000 members, New York State United Teachers is the largest teachers union in the state and has been pushing for the legislation.
