Buffalo, NY — New York residents are bracing for a significant winter storm as weakening low pressure brings rain, then transitions to heavy wet snow on New Year’s Day. Lake-effect snow warnings have been issued for areas east and southeast of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, with accumulations of up to a foot or more expected in higher elevations.
Western New York will experience gusty winds up to 40 mph on Wednesday, with snow intensifying by nightfall. In the Tug Hill region near Lake Ontario, heavy snowfall fueled by Atlantic moisture could pile up to a foot by Thursday.
The storm will bring blustery, freezing conditions through the weekend, with additional snowfall likely in Oswego and southern Lewis counties.
