Possible changes on the way for concealed carry instruction in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – Some changes could be coming to the training process to receive a permit to conceal carry a handgun. A state commission that oversees training is considering a mandate for the so-called red book for each student.

Members of the North Carolina Concealed Carry Instructors Association are voicing strong opposition to the proposal.

“In 30 years, 900,000 people have received their concealed carry handgun permit in North Carolina, they’ve never required the book as being mandatory,” said Stephen Xavier, the VP of Communications for NCCCIA.

North Carolinians have been able to obtain a concealed carry permit since 1995.

The red book breaks down everything you need to know while going through the training process, including where you can and cannot carry in the state.

“As an instructor, we have to follow the guidelines within the book, which is reasonable,” Xavier said.

But he, and other members of NCCCIA, argue the book is flawed, “And as the law changes, the book cannot be updated fast enough, which is why we’re fighting to have the book online as a PDF, we can download and make available to students, but can also be changed in real time by the state.”
