LAWMAKERS are meeting to discuss complaints against homeowners associations and how legislation could be passed to improve their governance.
North Carolina resident Sue Hodgin addressed a committee last week claiming that her HOA acts like a “secret society” in how it chooses to operate.
The state has around 14,000 HOAs and state representative Frank Iler wants to see change after receiving hundreds of complaints about the associations.
“We’ve heard from hundreds of people that the HOA boards and board members have engaged in activities that should be concerning to those of us who represent these citizens,” he said last month.
Iler noted that the advice to citizens who have a HOA dispute that they should just hire a lawyer is not enough.
“That’s been our advice to a lot of these folks. And in my opinion, I’ve never thought that was quite good enough” he added.
