According to a report published by The Hill, a mother in NC is suing a school district after alleging that officials “forced her children to switch schools while they experienced homelessness.”. According to the lawsuit, the mother, who is identified as “K.L.” in the suit, claims that Gaston County Schools, the state coordinator for Education of Homeless Children, and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, forced her children to leave their original schools while facing the trauma of being homeless.
According to the report, K.L. states that in September 2023 she was evicted from her residence while her children were students at New Hope Elementary and Cramerton Middle School. With nowhere to go, K.L. switched her children to car riders while searching for a new residence. When K.L. met with Gaston County district officials to work out a deal to keep both children at the same schools while she searched for “affordable housing”, she was denied.
Also, one of her kids was subsequently kicked off the middle school cheer team. The lawsuit is asking Gaston Schools to allow the children to go back to their original schools.
