Outgoing North Carolina governor Roy Cooper delivered his farewell speech today at Nash County Community College. As his term nears an end, with new governor Josh Stein all set to take oath on January 11, he decided to reflect on the major accomplishments and decisions that were taken during his term.
In the 25-minute speech, he called the people of Nashville his ‘extended family’. It was in Nash County that he started his gubernatorial campaign in 2015, ultimately winning in 2016.
“It’s great to come home and be here with my extended family. The people here in my beloved Nash County and Rocky Mount,” said Cooper, a Nashville native.
Cooper has been in public office since 1987, being elected to both the state House and state Senate. He served four terms as Attorney General, and two consecutive terms as Governor.
“For the last eight years, getting to lead the state I love so much has been an extraordinary privilege. Challenging, humbling, and the best job I’ve ever had. I wanted to build in North Carolina, where people are better educated and healthier with more money in their pockets, and the opportunity to live a life of purpose and abundance,” Cooper said.
