Ohio auditor: ‘We feel the pain’ but can’t do anything about property tax strain. Here’s why.

Given the number of different offices and their similar sounding names, it’s understandable when residents mistake one for another.

This was made abundantly clear to us here in the Auditor of State’s Office during this summer’s Ohio State Fair.

We had a lot of conversations with homeowners who are unhappy with trends in Ohio property values and the resulting increase in taxes.

Believe me, we feel the pain.

Property values in many parts of Ohio are jumping by double-digit percentages, and the resulting property tax increases are coming at a time when people’s pocketbooks are already taking a hit from inflation-driven prices.

What we do

As Auditor of State, my office is responsible for ensuring public funds are being spent appropriately and lawfully by more than 5,900 state and local government agencies.

Our auditors and contracted independent public accounting firms regularly review the finances of state, city, county, village, township and other public offices.
