Historic Ohio drought covered during Farm Science Review

LONDON, Ohio ( WCMH ) – In addition to the latest in farming technology, industry exhibits, and educational booths, the historic drought Ohio is experiencing has also been a focal point of this year’s Farm Science Review.

“Whatever the hot topic of the day, is typically talked about in all the buildings all day long, well, as you can imagine that is absolutely the topic of the day is drought,” said Adam Sharp, Executive Vice President of the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. “We have parts of the state of Ohio that at this point you’re hearing farmers say this is the worst they’ve ever seen in their lifetime.”

Farmers in drought affected areas have been harvesting between a third and a half what they would in a normal year, according to the farm bureau. They also said dry weather has forced many to start using their winter hay supply to feed livestock.

“This is historic, this is something many farmers have not seen in generations if ever on their farm,” said Ty Higgins, spokesperson for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. “And we need to make sure they know the resources are out there to help them through.”
