Ohio National Guard, Salvation Army, more Ohioans helping with Helene efforts

CLEVELAND (WJW) – As recovery efforts continue following Hurricane Helene, a number of Northeast Ohioans are being sent to southern states to help out.

On Monday, Governor Mike DeWine announced that he was activating members of the Ohio Army National Guard to support North Carolina.

Parts of the state, and especially Asheville, are dealing with widespread catastrophic damage.

Roads are washed away. Neighborhoods are underwater with more than 100 people dead and hundreds more still missing.

“Ohio is answering the call to help Governor Cooper and North Carolina in its recovery,” said DeWine.

Ten Airmen from Homeland Response Forces, 121st Air Refueling Wing have been activated and will assist with fatality search and recovery.

Additionally, six soldiers from Company B, 3rd Battalion, 238th Aviation Regiment out of North Canton are already there providing air movement of supplies, equipment and personnel.
