Who won the VP debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz? Here’s what a new poll found

WASHINGTON – Who won the vice presidential debate Tuesday night: Ohio Sen. JD Vance or Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz? It depends, according to a new poll.

The POLITICO/Focaldata snap poll, conducted among 902 adults with a weighted sample of 525 likely voters, found that 72% of Democrats thought Walz won the debate while only five percent thought Vance won. Twenty-three percent of respondents didn’t watch.

On the contrary, 71% of Republicans thought Vance won the debate while four percent think Walz won. Twenty-four respondents didn’t watch.

The poll shows the stark divide between Republicans and Democrats over support for their party’s nominees at the top of the ticket. When asked who would make the better vice president, 92% of Democrats chose Walz and 91% of Republicans chose Vance.

Among the “other” category, which includes independents, 34% of voters surveyed thought Walz won the debate while 25% chose Vance. Forty-four percent of voters thought Walz would make the better vice president while 36% chose Vance.
