In a 4-3 decision issued Friday, the Ohio Supreme Court upheld a 60-year prison sentence for a man who went on a two-month kidnapping and robbery spree in Hamilton County.
Ohio’s criminal sentencing system allows trial court judges to give people convicted of multiple crimes sentences that run either concurrently or consecutively. This can swing prison time from a few years to a few decades.
Tommy Glover got a 60-year stacked sentence for forcing people at gunpoint to take him to ATMs and withdraw money. Hamilton County Common Pleas Court Judge Jody Luebbers ruled that consecutive sentences were needed to protect the public.
Glover appealed, arguing that the lengthy sentence wasn’t based on the case record. He won a partial victory at the 1 st District Court of Appeals, but prosecutors then asked the Ohio Supreme Court to overturn that decision .
On Friday, the supreme court reversed the appellate court, deciding that Luebbers had followed state law on consecutive sentences.
