(WJW) — New Ohio laws taking effect next year govern the use of cell phones and bathrooms in schools as well as school-sanctioned religious expression.

The state’s minimum wage will also increase by 25 cents for non-tipped workers, to $10.70 per hour, and 10 cents for tipped workers, to $5.35 per hour.

Ohio’s new ‘bathroom’ law

Senate Bill 104 , which takes effect on Feb. 25, prohibits Ohio’s public and private schools, colleges and universities from allowing individuals to use multiperson restrooms, locker rooms, changing rooms or shower rooms that don’t correspond with the gender they were assigned at birth — “without regard” for the individual’s gender identity.

Under the measure, called the “Protect All Students Act,” schools must designate those facilities for single-sex use.

The measure does allow for school districts to make accommodations for special circumstances, upon a student’s request. Those accommodations must be for single-occupancy or faculty facilities.
