Are you Ohio proud? As much as Ohioans rag on their own state, they are often secretly just as proud of it. There’s an unspoken security here in Ohio in which we know we’re not perfect, but at the end of the day, we still think Ohio is pretty awesome compared to other states… and we’re proud of it. Here’s when we thought so and why:
1) When the world realized man could in fact walk on the moon.

You might be aware that Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot on the moon. What you may not know is that he hailed from Ohio. Today, the location of his inaugural flight—where he took off in a Ford Tri-Motor airplane at just five years old—has been transformed into a tribute to this significant event in history. The former Warren Airways is now home to a replica of a lunar module, celebrating Armstrong’s remarkable journey into space.
2) When Ohio decided in 1803 to be the first state in the Northwest Territory to officially not permit slavery.

3) When Oberlin College has demonstrated to the nation that everyone, regardless of their gender or background, is entitled to the opportunity for a college education. The institution stands firm in its belief that access to education should not be limited by one’s sex or ethnicity and promotes an inclusive environment for all students.

Oberlin College holds a significant place in American history as one of the pioneering institutions to welcome students of African descent. Remarkably, it was also the first college to grant admission to women, accomplishing this milestone in 1837. In addition to its progressive stance on education, Oberlin took an active role in social justice by serving as a crucial stop on the Underground Railroad, aiding those seeking freedom from slavery.
4) When the Ohio State Buckeyes clinched the NCAA National Championship. With a total of nine championship titles under our belt, we are determined to add another one to our achievements!

5) Anytime the Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Michigan Wolverines.

It’s pretty clear what’s happening here—Ohio State fans are proudly showcasing their loyalty! O-H… I-O!
6) Whenever you enjoy the excitement of America’s beloved pastime, remember that it was the Cincinnati Reds who paved the way for professional baseball.

7) Whenever rock and roll comes up in conversation, it’s hard not to mention that we’re proud to be the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Cleveland proudly carries the title of the birthplace of rock and roll, a distinction it has truly earned. This city is not only where the term “rock and roll” originated, but it also hosted the very first rock concert in history.
8) And also the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

9) As you board a plane, it’s hard not to feel a sense of gratitude for the pioneering spirit of the Wright brothers from Ohio. Their groundbreaking work in aviation laid the foundation for modern flight, reminding you that their ingenuity is what allows you to soar through the skies today.

The brothers from Dayton are well-known for their groundbreaking achievements in aviation, but they weren’t the only Ohioans making history. A candle maker from Medina also played a significant role by being the first to document and share details about this landmark flight. His publication, titled “Gleanings In Bee Culture,” included references to this remarkable event.
10) Moreover, when Thomas A. Edison introduced us to the wonders of electricity, he truly gifted the world a transformative innovation.

11) When Jesse Owens showed us how a gold medal is won.

Jesse Owens is celebrated not only as a four-time Olympic gold medalist but also cherished as an Ohio native. He relocated to Ohio with his family at the age of nine. His remarkable athletic career culminated in the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Nazi Germany, a period marked by significant racial tension. Stories persist that Adolf Hitler snubbed Owens, irked by the athlete’s impressive achievements. However, there are conflicting accounts suggesting that the two may have exchanged a handshake. It’s a fascinating chapter in history!
12) Over the years, we’ve built a strong reputation for our ability to settle into the White House seamlessly.

13) Whenever we hear “Hang on Sloopy.”
This song serves as an unofficial anthem for our state, and there’s no one who performs it quite like the impressive marching band of The Ohio State University. We’ve expressed it before, and we’ll continue to do so: O-H-I-O!
14) The design of our flag stands out uniquely compared to those of other states.

15) When “the man with the golden voice” was discovered in Columbus.
Many will remember Ted Williams, a man whose story was highlighted in a video by The Columbus Dispatch. Once a prominent radio personality, Williams faced a series of poor decisions that ultimately led him to lose his job and find himself living on the streets. However, everything changed when a video showcasing his remarkable voice went viral. Thanks to the internet’s influence, he was flooded with job opportunities, allowing him to create a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting homeless shelters.
16) Whenever you’re in the mood for a square burger or a frosty.

17) Because we were the first to know that chili actually does in fact belong on top of noodles.

Well, at least some of us believe this. What’s your personal opinion on the matter?
18) Whenever you’re in need of a Life Saver.

19) Because we brought this world hot dogs.

According to popular folklore, a man named Harry Mozley Stevens from Niles is credited with creating a beloved snack for baseball fans by putting a sausage in a bun. This delightful treat has become a staple at ballgames, and to commemorate his inventive contribution, an annual celebration takes place in his honor!
20) Whenever you come home from vacation and realize there really is no place like home.

We’ve got a thing or two to be proud of — and this list just scratches the surface. There are so many reasons to be Ohio proud! Can you think of any? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
