Native Americans making mark on entertainment industry with shows like “Echo”

Debuting at the beginning of January, Marvel’s new series “ Echo ” tells the story of a deaf Native American girl who after a rough start to life rediscovers and embraces her heritage in the sooner state.

Joining “ Tulsa King , ” “ Killers of the Flower Moon ” and “ Reservation Dogs ” with their Oklahoma ties, Oklahoman Ryker Sixkiller worked on all three in different positions , and now adds “ E cho ” to the list.

” It was hard, long hot days ,” Sixkiller said. “W e aring nothing but a loincloth on the sand”

F ilmed in Georgia two summers ago , he was on the stunt team and plays ‘S tickball’ in the show , a traditional N ative A merican game he says was once used to settle tribal arguments.

” It was just , it was great to see just how much they cared about portraying us in the right way , ” Sixkiller said.

H opeful the show will keep this piece of N ative culture alive and growing , he says accurate N ative representation really wasn’ t the case when he was a kid.

” We were the problem in every movie. W e were not intelligent, or we were savages , ” Sixkiller said. ” With this, it just warms my heart, t hey can see this and be like, yeah, that’s about probably what it looked like.”
