STROUD, Okla. ( KFOR ) — Oklahoma Highway Patrol Troopers are getting ready to crack down on drivers who are not following a law meant to save lives.
It only takes seconds for a normal drive to turn dangerous and no one knows that better than Trooper Russell Callicoat.
“I’ve been hit six times by either drunk drivers or distracted drivers,” said Callicoat.
Which is why OHP is urging drivers to move over before someone else dies or gets hurt.
“I mean, I’ve broken neck, ribs. It tore part of my heart,” said Callicoat.
It’s a law they said people break all the time.
“Especially this past year, we’ve seen how devastating the effects can be of what’s really a very easily remedied problem,” said Tim Tipton, Commissioner of Public Safety.

Starting Sunday, the OHP is stepping up patrols across Oklahoma looking for drivers not following the state’s Move Over law.
Last year, fines were increased to $1,000. A second offense will run you $2,500.
