Are there actually that many expired tags in Oklahoma? New registration law, what to know

Oklahoma drivers stuck in traffic are used to seeing paper tags on neighboring vehicles, but too often those tags have a date past expiration.

Though it feels like an overly familiar sight, does Oklahoma actually have an issue with expired paper tags on vehicles? Do the police enforce it?

Here’s what we know:

New law gives Oklahoma motorists 10 days to obtain license plate

As of Sept. 1, temporary tags are only valid for 10 days after purchase. The law previously allowed up to 30 days for drivers to obtain a metal license plate along with two pre-registration decals.

The new law, Senate Bill 2035 or the Mason Treat Act, requires all vehicles purchased through dealerships or private sellers to be pre-registered with the state within two business days. Purchasers will continue to have two months to obtain the title, pay taxes and fully register it.

The Mason Treat Act, written by Senate President Pro Tem Greg Treat (R-Oklahoma City), is named after Treat’s son, who was critically injured during a routine traffic stop along Interstate 40 at age 16.
